History

Spanish explorers landed in the Daphne Alabama region circa 1557 according to various sources.  However it wasn’t until the later date of 1874 that the town was actually established with a post office and then the town was incorporated on July 8, 1927.  Upon being settled, the town was originally inhabited by many of the Italian settler’s who brought their fine culinary, wine making and agricultural heritage.  The festivals that began in that era are still part of Daphne’s community.  Festivals such as the “Festa Italiana” and “ Eastern Shore Arts and Crafts Festival” are a great attraction for people all across the eastern shore of Alabama.  Since it’s time of incorporation the town has seen immense expansion and development.  In fact in the past years the town has seen an increase in the population of 30% making it one of Alabama’s fastest growth area’s.

Businesses

Daphne has a healthy manufacturing industry that makes up 18% of the local businesses.  Retail trade is a close second to the most popular industry at 17% of all jobs.  Food Service, accommodations, public services, administration, construction and scientific/ technical industries round out equally between 6-8% of total business in the area.

Housing Market

The home market in Daphne is vibrant with close to 200 homes being sold each quarter.  The Median home sale price dipped in the second quarter of 2012 to $150,000, however the median home sale price has been relatively consistent over the past 2 years compared to the national average.

While existing Daphne home listings are always on the market, there are currently new options in foreclosures, REO’s, short sales and new housing developments.  In fact, the new housing developments that being built on in Daphne give a new community offering in lightly populated and scenic areas the town.

The Jubilee City

The “Jubilee” event in Daphne brings blue crabs, shrimp and fish right up to the shoreline as the people in the area gather to catch them at their feet.  This fun event brings out families and fisherman to the eastern shore beaches and is an annual celebration of the natural bounty that Daphne has to offer.

Hospitals

There are 3 hospitals within 12 miles of Daphne including Thomas Hospital in Fairhope, University of South Alabama’s children’s and women’s hospital and the North Baldwin Infirmary.

Schools

Daphne is home to two elementary schools, one middle school and one high school.  Students looking to further their education locally have their choice of three universities with over 2000 students within 26 miles as well as the United States Sports Academy which calls Daphne it’s home.
